Oh, and there is also another catch: as said, we ASSUME that the images we publish are public domain, but we rely on external sources and can therefore not always be sure. However, all backgrounds that were made by our users are automatically public domain, unless they've explicitly stated that their images are copyrighted.

Ah, well that is a bit tricky. We assume that all images we publish are in the public domain : that means they are not copyrighted, and you can indeed sell them. However, you can not put your own copyright on an image that is public domain. You can make money with it, but you can't say "the idea for this drawing is mine".
